Background

Founded in 2012, OneStream Software is a corporate performance management (CPM) software company whose goal is to "take finance further." I interned with OneStream from June to August of 2023 as a product design intern. OneStream separates itself from its competitors with it's customizable platform, where companies can add OneStream-specific applications to their interfaces that help run their finances and operations.

Project Overview

PeoplePlanning is OneStream's human resource application that manages and records the company's employee information. In OneStream’s inital software, users are taken off course of their user journey when they are setting up their PeoplePlanning application and need to view OneStream’s help documentation. My job for this project was to take the existing redesign of the application and create an additional button that provides users with a support documentation pop-up without removing users from their users journey.

People Planning's Goals

Pain Points - Support Documentation

Empower Managers
Easily plan for new hires and changes for compensation, benefits, taxes, travel and other related expenses required for extended planning & analysis (XP&A).

Increase Collaboration
Share insights and collaborate using OneStream’s built-in reports and visualizations. Enhance dialogue with business partners on critical analysis and decision-making.

Model Plans
Leverage pre-built global drivers for salary, benefits and payroll taxes by title, geography, and salary band for real-time, dynamic planning.

The user journey is unclear, making navigation difficult.

There is a lack of visibility, which affects how easily users can find information.

Users have restricted freedom to download documentation as needed.

There is an inability to highlight, underline, and edit content, limiting user interaction with the material.

Additional Projects

During my internship with OneStream I was fortunate to contribute to multiple projects, including a target market study UX research project. While OneStream had over 1300 customers who used their software, the company lacked a master list of customer data such as demographics, location, annual revenue, and tenure as a OneStream customer.

Using data provided to us by Salesforce, OneStream's lead UX researcher and I created a report on our customers that highlighted our customers’ strengths, weaknesses, and demographics using quality assurance (QA) techniques. With the report, we created a master presentation for the entire company to use to recruit more customers and retain our existing ones.

Project Goals

Identify and Define the Target Market
Conduct research to identify and clearly define the target audience, including demographic, geographic, psychographic, and behavioral characteristics. This helps in understanding who the customers are and what drives their purchasing decisions.

Understand Customer Needs and Preferences
Gather insights into the needs, preferences, and pain points of the target market. This includes understanding customer motivations, buying behaviors, and factors that influence their choices, which will guide product development and marketing strategies.

Assess Market Opportunities and Competitor Landscape
Analyze the competitive environment and assess market opportunities within the target market. This includes identifying gaps in the market, potential areas for growth, and understanding how the company’s offerings compare to competitors in meeting customer demands.

Pain Points

The company had minimal understanding of its customer base, leading to misaligned strategies.

There was a lack of internal communication among project teams, causing inefficiencies and delays.

The company lacked quantitative insights, hindering data-driven decision-making.

There was a need for presentation materials to effectively communicate ideas and proposals.
